Community Education
LUPD offers community education programs to students, staff, faculty and the local community throughout the year. Our presenters will come to your office, residence hall, team practice, organization or department meeting to facilitate programs on the topics below. If there’s a topic you’d like us to present on that’s not listed, just contact us and we will come up with a presentation that meets your needs.
REQUEST A COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM
A.L.I.C.E (Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate)
ALICE prepares participates to survive an active shooter incident by analyzing previous active shooter events to understand the best tactics for survival. The program can include live action scenarios in which participants practice techniques in realistic situations. The training is conducted by ڱ Police Officers who are certified as ALICE instructors.
De-Escalation, Confrontation and Conflict Management
This program provides participates with an understanding of the physiological effects of stress which can inhibit communication and intensify confrontations. Participants are taught methods to manage that stress and are trained in implementing various tools meant to improve communication and focus on problem-solving. A self-assessment is also completed to aid participants in understanding their own conflict management styles.
Relationship Violence
This presentation is intended to give a basic understanding of the dynamics of relationship violence while also providing an overview of dating and domestic violence on college campuses.
Drunk Driving
This presentation will cover the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs as well as the specific criminal repercussions of a drunk driving arrest.
Fire Safety
This presentation will help participants to understand the risks associated with fires on a college campus. The program will also cover what to do during a fire alarm and prevention tips.
Comfort Canine
Comfort dogs have been shown to reduce anxiety, lower heart rate, and improve one’s sense of calm. LUPD’s comfort canine “Jet” has been trained to be a calming presence to community members at events or in times of crisis. You may request Jet to attend your event by completing a community education request form (linked above). Requests will be reviewed based on the handler and canine availability and suitability of the event/environment.
LUPD Information Session
This presentation provides an overview of the services and personnel of the ڱ Police Department. It will also cover the most common types of safety issues and crime on campus and some tips on how to avoid becoming a crime victim.
LUPD Unplugged
In an open and informal environment, participants are able to “ask a cop” whatever questions are their minds about law enforcement, police authority or public safety.
Positive Choices – Making Safe and Healthy Decisions around Alcohol Use
Student participants complete a personal risk assessment related to alcohol use through a series of guided scenario-based exercises wherein they make decisions around high-risk drinking, sexual assault, bystander intervention, intoxicated driving and alcohol poisoning.
R.A.D
The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by ڱ Police Officers who are certified R.A.D. Instructors.
Social media safety
This presentation focuses on how to protect yourself and your family on social media sites.
Understanding the Pathway to Violence
This program is meant to provide participants with a basic understanding of the behavioral evolution of an active shooter / violent offender and help them recognize potential risk factors and observable behaviors that may indicate an individual is in distress or in need of help.
Women's Safety
This presentation raises awareness about sexual assault, personal safety and provides useful tips for reducing your chances of becoming a victim of crime.
CPR/AED Familiarization
Certified CPR/AED instructors provide instruction on basic life-saving techniques to intervene on sudden cardiac arrests including the proper use of an automated external defibrillator. This course can be taught for certification or at basic familiarization level.
Stop the Bleed
Certified “stop the bleed” instructors provide participants with knowledge and hands-on techniques to control trauma related bleeding including the use of tourniquets and trauma dressings.
